Two mice set off in search of a kidnapped orphan girl.
Rated G. Smaller children may be frightened by the peril Penny faces, including a dramatic sequence where she and the mice are nearly drowned. Medusa goes after the mice with a shotgun. Hillbilly caricatures. Moonshine humor.
Didn't you bring somebody big with you? Like the police?
Kids won’t care where The Rescuers fits within the Disney canon (their first successful animated feature without Walt, their first to spawn a sequel, their last led by the Nine Old Men). But they’ll be swept up in the story from its opening frames, as the orphan girl Penny sneaks to the railing of the boat where she’s being held to drop a note in a bottle into the water below. As the mice assigned to locate and rescue her, the stammering Bernard (Bob Newhart) and the glamorous Miss Bianca (Eva Gabor) make for an improbable but winning team. Madame Medusa and her henchman Snoops are some of Disney’s most pathetic villains, with their petty bickering, frumpy fashion, and casual cruelty, but given our heros’ diminutive size and Penny’s young age, they and their pet alligators are more than villain enough. —
